Wk 1
———————————————————————————————

Tuesday August 22
Intro to Class & Project One.
HOMEWORK
Choose two films for your potential package design. For next class watch your chosen movies and identify potential candy tie-ins and observe, document and analyze the film's visual aesthetics.

For next Tuesday, create at least two 11x17 inch moodboards that encapsulates the movie's key scenes, objects, and dialogues. For each, develop an associative word/name list that represents the movie's essence. Save as a pdf presentation to present to class.

Wk 2
———————————————————————————————

Tuesday August 29
Review film choices, moodboards & initial candy tie-ins.

Introduction to dielines: Learn about packaging dielines and their importance.

Using existing packaging templates as starting points, create 3-5 paper packaging mockups of solutions to your product. Tape and glue is fine at this stage to wrap and protect your movie “candy”.

HOMEWORK
Based on feedback, sketch three different concept mockups for their candy packaging. Work digital or Analog or both. Use found dielines or make your own. Create a moodboard for each concept.

Incorporate potential design elements, styles, and vibes, embedding key terms that define each concept. Additionally, make a list of atleast 5-10 potential names for what you could call this candy.

Thursday August 31
Individual meetings to review concepts, moodboards & possible naming.

“Talking about Tabs:” Learn about different types of box enclosures.

HOMEWORK
Based on feedback, refine your three different concept mockups and make a short pdf presentation to present to the group.

Tuesday September 12
Review full-size physical prototypes and documentation ideas.

HOMEWORK
Make refinements based on feedback.

Add the “general food labeling requirements” on your design. See the FDA Labeling Guide and this FDA Reader for reference. At the minimum have this info:

  • Common name of the food (Principal Display Panel)
  • Net quantity of contents (PDP)
  • Ingredient list (PDP or information panel)
  • Name & location of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor (PDP or information panel)
  • Nutrition Information

Here is a pdf of templates that is editable in Illustrator.

Thursday September 14

Tuesday September 19
Intro to Project Two. Individual Crits and Work/Print/Prototype time.

HOMEWORK
Make refinements based on feedback and visit any office supply and/or art supply store and audit 3 different products and their display. Choose objects that interest you and that have formal and conceptual qualities that you think could be better leveraged through packaging design. Stick to hand sized supplies or smaller as we will be exploring point of purchase display of multiples.

Tuesday September 26
Project One Due — Post final dieline and photos here: Final Dieline & Photo Documentation

HOMEWORK
Refine Project One photographs (crop! and fix color and backgrounds). Print out your audit of 2-3 different products and their display on 11x17 laser prints. Your audits should answer:

1. How they are packaged (materials, pieces)

2. What do they look like? (graphics, patterns, words)

3. What was it like to open it? (steps, easy, hard, need other tools to open)

4. What are the problems? (too much, plastic, better materials, simpler, etc)

--

Thursday September 28
Pin up Audits and finish up photos of Project One.

HOMEWORK
For next class pick your object and explore the potential of the new packaging by creating 2  moodboards (with key words) that visualize initial inspiration. Outide of just typography, graphics and packaging...think about how disciplines like sculpture, architecture and fashion might help you come up with possible directions. Other paper crafts, interesting folds, shapes, paper art, die cuts, etc can be inspirational too. Print the two moodboards out 11x17.

Bring in 5-10 potential name ideas and print these out too testing typefaces as you try on/out names.

For next class: Bring xacto knives, scissors, glue, tape, bone scorer (or a butter knife), paper, chipboard (old cereal, cracker, snack boxes work great)

Wk 7
———————————————————————————————

Tuesday October 03
Pin up Moodboards to review and time to make intial paper mockups.

Start with using points, lines, planes, patterns, shapes, graphics, forms, relationships found on your product and its existing packaging. What about your object is interesting? A line, pattern, curve (see my scissor example below). Could you build a shape, edge, window, fold, panel, flap out of this?

HOMEWORK
Using existing packaging templates as starting points, create 5-10 paper packaging mockups of solutions to your product. Tape and glue is fine at this stage to wrap and protect your object

Thursday October 05
Review initial paper mockups.

HOMEWORK
Using your object, its shape, color, texture (form) as your guide create 3-5 logo/logotype sketches for next class. Use only black/white graphics that will translate well to the laser cutter/engraver. Bring these so we can pin them up. Use whatever tools you need to visualize the concepts. Drawing/digital/hybrid. Just need them big enough to see on the wall.

Choose final 2 paper mockup directions and refine.

Wk 8

HOMEWORK
Project Due Next Class. Create final prototype and photograph it for next class. Have 3-5 images and design an 18x32 inch poster that walks viewers through the design. Include packaging goals, brand kit of parts, dieline and final photos. Print on large format printers (plotters) in the lab.

Thursday November 09
Project 2  Packaging Due.

HOMEWORK
Post your 3-5 images for next class here: PROJECT_TWO

Bring in final prototype and 18x32 inch poster that walks us through your design. Include packaging goals, brand kit of parts, dieline and final photos. Print on large format printers (plotters) in the lab.

Consider what type of category you want to work in and interests you:
(clothing, sports, cooking, hardware, toys, cosmetics, food, drug, electronics, etc.)

and/or what packaging type:
(boxes: paperboard, corrugate etc, bags, labels/tags, bottles, cans, cartons, wrappers, etc.)

Choose one of three Project 3 options (Revival, Redesign or Weird Collab) and bring in a short 3-5 slide (pdf) presentation of two potential project ideas that presents the existing packaging situation (what do you have to work with), bullet points that outline your goals or the opportunity you see (what if?) and a moodboard that visualizes the dream :) State what final deliverables you are thinking of making.

If you are redesigning then why are you doing it, what could be better?
If you are reviving then what is the history that is worth reviving
and how is it relevant for today’s audiences?
If you are collabing then what will each brand bring to the relationship?

Use this project by Erik Marinovich as inspo of how it might be interesting to combine two identities in a new one....

or revive something from the past....
